Claire Powell

Illustrator

Claire is a New York Times best selling children’s book illustrator who got her first book deal in 2016 and has never looked back.

Her collaborations with Kes Gray and Simon Farnaby – The Night Before The Night Before Christmas; The Night after Christmas; The Wizard and Me – all topped the UK charts to become bestsellers. Her collaboration with Beth Lincoln on The Swifts was an instant New York Times bestseller and The King’s Birthday Suit – her picture book with Peter Bently – is a LOLLIES nominated book for 2023.

A hugely versatile artist, Claire prefers to work using traditional, hand-drawn techniques, and has a talent for creating characters that are brimming with emotion and personality, as well as a strong eye for detail and composition.

Claire's sense of humour often shines through her work but she is also drawn to spooky ghost stories and darker themes. She is interested in working on collections and anthologies as well as traditional novels and her dream commission would be to illustrate a classic tale such as The Wind in the Willows or Alice in Wonderland.

After spending many years in London, Claire now enjoys a quieter life in the rolling hills of Derbyshire with her partner Stefan (who may not agree that living with Claire is quiet).
