Jo Brown
IllustratorJo Brown is a professional illustrator from South Devon. She graduated from Falmouth College of Arts in 2000 with a BA Honours in Illustration. Working from her home studio in Teignmouth she illustrates nature, working mainly with pen and ink. The natural world is her inspiration and it can be found anywhere and everywhere, from the ‘weeds’ in her garden to the wilds of Dartmoor. Jo started her journal because she wanted to record the things she was discovering, as she found them, because nature is one of the most important things in her life. It’s consistent, it’s ubiquitous, it never lets her down, it makes her happy, and it’s all free. The nature journal is an illustrated memory of her discoveries in the order she finds them. Everything Jo has drawn in her journal was here long before we were and will be long after we’ve all gone. Jo believes things of such magnitude deserve respect and understanding, they deserve to be remembered. Many of the pages depict things that she has found in her own garden: the nature in her journal is nature that anyone can find. All that’s required is a little patience and quiet observation.
Jo has been featured on CNN, Newsround, BBC South West’s Inside Out and BBC Radio Devon. Her journal will be published in full colour by Short Books in October 2020.
Jo is currently closed to commissions.
