Michael Parkin

Illustrator

Michael grew up in the countryside just outside London, where he spent his childhood asking endless (and often unanswerable) questions like “How big is a baby shark?” (his parents still won’t let him forget asking this one on repeat for years!)... When no answer was satisfying enough, he began inventing his own, spinning absurd explanations and tall tales that would later inspire his storytelling.

After earning a first-class degree in Illustration from Kingston University in 2014, Michael began working as a freelance illustrator for clients including The New Yorker, Samsung, Penguin Random House, DK and many more. His work has received recognition from The Guardian and the AOI amongst others. Since becoming a father (twice!), Michael has turned his wacky ideas into fantastical stories for children. His debut book, Wrong Time Rooster, was published by Flying Eye in February 2025 to critical acclaim and has already been translated into six languages. It has been shortlisted for the Portsmouth Picture Book Award (2026), and longlisted for the Waterstones prize (2026) and The Booktrust Storytime Prize (2027).

His next book ‘Biguana’ is due to come out this Summer, with Flying Eye, which he already has several library and school visits lined up for.
